The Embassy of Sri Lanka in France celebrated the country’s 77th anniversary of Independence on 4 February 2025 under the theme “Towards a national renaissance”, in partnership with the diverse Sri Lankan community in France, with the presence of several French Guests of Honour. The ceremony, held at the Jacques Chirac Hall in the Paris 17 Marie, commenced with the hoisting of the national flag to the sound of Magul Bera by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in France and Permanent Delegate of Sri Lanka to UNESCO Manisha Gunasekera, the singing of the National Anthem, the singing of Jayamangala Gatha by Sri Lankan-heritage youth in France, remembrance of national heroes, and multi-faith observances delivered by religious leaders representing Buddhist, Hindu, Christian / Catholic and Islamic faiths. Independence Day Messages of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read out in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages, respectively.
The Ambassador in her address highlighted the unprecedented mandate bestowed on President Anura Kumara Disanayake and the new Government by the people of Sri Lanka representing all denominations and regions, and reiterated the invitation extended by the President to the overseas Sri Lankan community to support the Government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, as well as other ventures aimed at ethical governance and the development of the nation. She also apprised the attendees on progress in Sri Lanka – France relations and on Sri Lanka’s engagement in UNESCO.
The Chief Guest, the President of the France-Sri Lanka Friendship Group in the French National Assembly, Member of Parliament Hon. Soumya Bourouaha extended her warm felicitations to the Embassy and the Sri Lankan community in France, and commended the organising of a multi-cultural event reflecting the cosmopolitan and pluralistic composition of Sri Lanka. She also extended her deep appreciation to the Sri Lankan heritage community in France for their valued contribution to the progress and prosperity of France.
The Guest of Honour, the Mayor of Paris 17 Hon. Geoffroy Boulard extended warm greetings to the Ambassador and staff of the Embassy as well as to the Sri Lankan community in France, and valued the showcasing Sri Lanka’s beautiful culture in such an attractive manner.
The captivating cultural performances at the celebrations highlighted Sri Lanka's rich multi-cultural heritage, and comprised a modern Kandyan dance by the Thisaravi Art Academy; a stylised performance of Angampora by the Sri Desi Dance Academy; Pushpanjali Natyam by the Gurukshetra Academy; and a traditional Ves dance with Magul Bera by the Thala Art Academy. Patriotic songs were sung by the youth of Our Lady of Lanka Catholic Community Association in Paris and the staff of the Sri Lanka Embassy in France.
The Maha Sangha and other religious dignitaries were offered Dana by the Embassy. The event concluded with the serving of kiribath and traditional Sri Lankan sweetmeats to all guests. Over 250 participants, including representatives of associations, professionals, second-generation youth, scholars, artists, and students participated in the celebrations.

L'Ambassade du Sri Lanka en France célèbre le 77ᵉ anniversaire de l’Indépendance avec la communauté sri-lankaise et des dignitaires français
L'Ambassade du Sri Lanka en France a célébré, le 4 février 2025, le 77ᵉ anniversaire de l’Indépendance du pays sous le thème « Vers une renaissance nationale », en partenariat avec la communauté sri-lankaise en France et en présence de plusieurs invités d’honneur français. La cérémonie, qui s’est tenue dans la Salle Jacques Chirac de la Mairie du 17ᵉ arrondissement de Paris, a débuté par la levée du drapeau national au son du Magul Bera, effectuée par Son Excellence Madame Manisha Gunasekera, Ambassadrice du Sri Lanka en France et Déléguée permanente du Sri Lanka auprès de l’UNESCO. Cet acte solennel a été suivi par l’interprétation de l’Hymne national, le chant du Jayamangala Gatha par la jeunesse d'origine sri-lankaise en France, un hommage aux héros nationaux et des prières interconfessionnelles conduites par des représentants des confessions bouddhiste, hindoue, chrétienne/catholique et islamique. Les messages officiels du Président, de la Première Ministre ainsi que du Ministre des Affaires étrangères, de l’Emploi à l’étranger et du Tourisme du Sri Lanka ont ensuite été lus respectivement en cinghalais, en tamoul et en anglais.
Dans son allocution, Madame l'Ambassadrice a souligné le mandat sans précédent confié par le peuple sri-lankais, toutes confessions et régions confondues, à Son Excellence le Président Anura Kumara Dissanayake et à son gouvernement. Elle a réitéré l’invitation lancée par le Président à la diaspora sri-lankaise à soutenir l’initiative « Clean Sri Lanka », ainsi que d'autres projets en faveur d’une gouvernance éthique et du développement national. Elle a également fait le point sur l’évolution des relations bilatérales entre le Sri Lanka et la France ainsi que sur l'engagement du pays auprès de l’UNESCO.
L’invitée d’honneur, Madame Soumya Bourouaha, Députée et Présidente du Groupe d’Amitié France-Sri Lanka à l’Assemblée Nationale française, a adressé ses chaleureuses félicitations à l’Ambassade et à la communauté sri-lankaise en France. Elle a salué l’organisation d’un événement multiculturel illustrant le caractère cosmopolite et pluraliste du Sri Lanka, tout en exprimant sa profonde reconnaissance envers la communauté d'origine sri-lankaise en France pour sa précieuse contribution à la prospérité et au dynamisme de la France.
Monsieur Geoffroy Boulard, Maire du 17ᵉ arrondissement de Paris et hôte d’honneur, a également adressé ses vives félicitations à Madame l'Ambassadrice et à son équipe, ainsi qu'à la communauté sri-lankaise en France, et a salué l’excellente mise en avant de la splendide culture sri-lankaise.
Le programme culturel, particulièrement captivant, a mis en lumière le patrimoine multiculturel du Sri Lanka à travers des performances artistiques exceptionnelles, notamment une danse kandyenne contemporaine par l’Académie Thisaravi Art, une démonstration stylisée d’Angampora par l’Académie Sri Desi Dance, une danse traditionnelle Pushpanjali Natyam par l’Académie Gurukshetra, ainsi qu’une danse Ves avec le Magul Bera interprétée par l’Académie Thala Art. Des chants patriotiques ont également été interprétés par la jeunesse de l'Association catholique Notre-Dame de Lanka à Paris et par le personnel de l'Ambassade du Sri Lanka en France.
À l’issue de la célébration, les membres du Maha Sangha et les autres dignitaires religieux ont reçu le Dana, offert par l’Ambassade. La cérémonie s’est clôturée par un moment convivial autour du kiribath et de douceurs traditionnelles sri-lankaises, partagés avec l’ensemble des invités. L’événement a rassemblé plus de 250 participants, parmi lesquels figuraient des représentants d’associations, des professionnels, la jeunesse de deuxième génération, des universitaires, des artistes et des étudiants.
