The International Day of Vesak 2025 was celebrated by the Member States of UNESCO with a Symposium themed “Buddhist Cosmopolitanism and Exchange along the Silk Road: Interplay between Buddhism and Trade in Ancient Asia”, on the full moon day of Vesak of 12 May 2025 at UNESCO headquarters. The Symposium was organized by the Permanent Delegation of Sri Lanka in association with UNESCO.
The Chairperson of the Executive Board Vera El Khoury Lacoeuilhe; the Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Xing Qu; and the Chief Incumbent of the International Buddhist Centre in Paris, the Co-President of the French Buddhist Union and the Chief Sangha Nayaka of France The Most Venerable Parawahera Chandaratana Thero addressed the Symposium as Guests of Honour, while the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Sri Lanka to UNESCO Manisha Gunasekera presided over the event.
The Keynote Address at the Symposium was delivered by eminent historian, numismatist, art historian, and archaeologist Prof. Osmund Bopearachchi (Corresponding Member of the prestigious French Academy of Inscriptions and Belles Lettres and Emeritus Director of Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research). The Keynote was followed by a vibrant panel discussion with a distinguished lineup of scholars comprising Prof. Jean-Noel Robert (Member of the French Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres and Emeritus Professor at Collège de France); Prof. Vincent Lefèvre (Professor of South and South-East Asian Archaeology and Art History, Sorbonne University, and former General Curator of Heritage, Director of Conservation and Collections at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts); Dr. Ariane de Saxcé (Research Associate, German Archaeological Institute, Bonn); and Dr. Shabahang Mehrdad (Silk Roads Programme of UNESCO).
The Symposium explored Buddhism’s pivotal role in linking the ancient civilizations of Asia, and highlighted the vibrant interplay and symbiotic relationship between Buddhism and trade along the Silk Road and across the Indian Ocean. It underscored the role of Buddhist communities as mediators of culture, trade, and artistic traditions, and highlighted their enduring relevance in fostering inter-cultural dialogue. The discussions also demonstrated how ancient images and associated symbols can be seen as visual manifestations of social, commercial, and cultural networks, and how they illuminate ancient patterns of circulation across land and sea.
The discussions were followed by a vibrant exchange of ideas during the Q and A. The event was attended by Ambassadors and Permanent Delegates to UNESCO, Delegates, Members of the UNESCO Secretariat, scholars, academics, students, as well as the Buddhist clergies of many countries and religious dignitaries.
The Symposium follows the adoption of the historic Decision 219 EX/27 on the Commemoration of the International Day of Vesak by the UNESCO Executive Board at its 219th Session in 2024, subsequent to which the International Day of Vesak is celebrated in the house of UNESCO every year. The Decision underscores UNESCO's enduring commitment to promoting peace and intercultural dialogue through the profound and universal values embedded in Vesak.
This year’s Vesak Day Message by the Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay, which was referred to by the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Sri Lanka in her address, invited the world to return to the core values of “peace, compassion and generosity” advocated by the Buddha. The Director-General’s Message also highlighted the Decision adopted at the 219th session of the Executive Board, and the role of Sri Lanka in the annual celebration of Vesak at UNESCO.

L’UNESCO célèbre la Journée internationale du Vesak par un symposium mettant en lumière l’héritage bouddhique commun et cosmopolite de l’Asie
La Journée internationale du Vesak 2025 a été célébrée par les États membres de l’UNESCO lors d’un symposium placé sous le thème : « Cosmopolitisme bouddhique et échanges le long de la Route de la soie : interactions entre le bouddhisme et le commerce dans l’Asie ancienne », à l’occasion du jour de pleine lune du Vesak, le 12 mai 2025, au siège de l’UNESCO. Ce symposium a été organisé par la Délégation Permanente du Sri Lanka auprès de l’UNESCO, en collaboration avec l’UNESCO.
La Présidente du Conseil exécutif, Mme Vera El Khoury Lacoeuilhe, le Directeur Général Adjoint de l’UNESCO, M. Xing Qu, ainsi que le chef du Centre bouddhique international de Paris, co-président de l’Union bouddhiste de France et Chef Sangha Nayaka de France, le Très Vénérable Parawahera Chandaratana Thero, se sont exprimés en tant qu’invités d’honneur. L’Ambassadrice, Déléguée Permanente du Sri Lanka auprès de l’UNESCO, Manisha Gunasekera, a présidé la cérémonie.
Le discours principal du symposium a été prononcé par le professeur Osmund Bopearachchi, historien, numismate, historien de l’art et archéologue éminent (membre correspondant de la prestigieuse Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres de France et Directeur de recherche émérite au Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) ). Son intervention a été suivie d’une table ronde animée avec la participation de chercheurs de renom, comprenant le Professeur Jean-Noël Robert, (membre de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres et professeur émérite au Collège de France) ; le Professeur Vincent Lefèvre, (professeur d’archéologie et d’histoire de l’art de l’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est à l’Université Sorbonne, ancien conservateur général du patrimoine et ancien directeur de la conservation et des collections au musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet) ; la Dre Ariane de Saxcé, (chercheuse associée à l’Institut archéologique allemand de Bonn) ; et le Dr Shabahang Mehrdad, (représentant du Programme des Routes de la soie de l’UNESCO).
Le symposium a exploré le rôle fondamental du bouddhisme dans le lien entre les civilisations anciennes de l’Asie, en mettant en lumière les interactions dynamiques et la relation symbiotique entre le bouddhisme et le commerce le long de la Route de la soie et à travers l’océan Indien. Il a mis en exergue le rôle des communautés bouddhistes en tant que médiatrices de la culture, du commerce et des traditions artistiques, tout en soulignant leur pertinence continue dans la promotion du dialogue interculturel. Les discussions ont également montré comment les images anciennes et les symboles associés peuvent être perçus comme des manifestations visuelles de réseaux sociaux, commerciaux et culturels, révélant les anciens schémas de circulation terrestre et maritime.
Les interventions ont été suivies d’un échange riche d’idées au cours de la session de questions-réponses. L’événement a rassemblé des Ambassadeurs et Délégués Permanents auprès de l’UNESCO, des membres du Secrétariat de l’UNESCO, des chercheurs, universitaires, étudiants, ainsi que des membres du clergé bouddhiste de nombreux pays et des dignitaires religieux.
Le symposium fait suite à l’adoption de la décision historique 219 EX/27 sur la commémoration de la Journée internationale du Vesak par le Conseil exécutif de l’UNESCO lors de sa 219e session en 2024. Depuis, la Journée internationale du Vesak est célébrée chaque année au siège de l’UNESCO. Cette décision réaffirme l’engagement constant de l’UNESCO à promouvoir la paix et le dialogue interculturel à travers les valeurs profondes et universelles incarnées par Vesak.
Dans son message à l’occasion de la Journée du Vesak 2025, la Directrice Générale de l’UNESCO, Mme Audrey Azoulay — citée par l’Ambassadrice et Déléguée Permanente du Sri Lanka dans son allocution — a invité le monde à revenir aux valeurs fondamentales de « paix, compassion et générosité » prônées par le Bouddha. Le message de la Directrice Générale a également mis en avant la décision adoptée lors de la 219e session du Conseil exécutif ainsi que le rôle du Sri Lanka dans la célébration annuelle du Vesak à l’UNESCO.
