01. Ceylon Tea Dyed/Branded masks distributed at the “Salon Zen” Exhibition
Ceylon Tea Dye/Branded masks distributed at the “Salon Zen” a pioneer in trade fairs dedicated to personal development and the art of living, which was held from 1st to 5th October 2020 in Paris attended over 35,000 visitors during the 5 days of the show.
Having the objective of increasing the awareness of Ceylon Tea as a global brand, the Sri Lanka Tea Board has introduced a Ceylon Tea branded face mask to be distributed among the business community worldwide on a complimentary basis. The specialty of the Ceylon Tea branded face mask is that it has been dyed with the use of Ceylon Tea Dye, which is a by-product of ice tea manufacturing. With a re-usability of over 30 washes, additional benefits include natural antimicrobial (AATCC 100) properties, bio-degradability, eco-friendliness and non-toxicity.
The Ceylon Tea masks distributed at the “Salon Zen” along with a “Guayapi” organic Ceylon tea. “Guayapi” is distributing various Sri Lankan origin organic products such as organic tea, organic spices, kitual tickle, Kurrakkan and herbal products to the French customers.
02. Franco-Sri Lankan Friendship Ceremony on the Occasion of the Unveiling of the Completed Restoration Work of the Hemachandra Rajapaksa Tombstone in Véretz, France
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris together with the National Heritage Foundation of France and the city of Véretz in the region of Touraine, Loire Valley organized a Franco-Sri Lanka Friendship Ceremony on Saturday, 24th of October in conjunction with the unveiling of the completed restoration work of the tombstone of Don Reginald Steven Hemachandra Rajahpaksa, a Sri Lankan who had lived in the town of Véretz.
Don Reginald Steven Hemachandra Rajahpaksa who was also known as the ‘Maharadja of Véretz’ was a renowned personality and a major contributor to the history of Véretz. He was born on the 24th of April 1898 in Rathmalana. He moved first to Great Britain and then France where he lived until his death in 1936 at the age of 38 years. The colourful grave of Don Reginald Steven Hemachandra Rajahpaksa is found at the bend of a path in the Véretz cemetery next to two other famous graves, Eugene Bizeau and Paul Louis Courier.
After extensive research done by the French Heritage Foundation, and the investigations made by the President of the ‘Surrounding Areas Historical Society’ of the Touraine region, the official restoration of the grave took place in the presence of Mrs. Thilini Jayasekara, Chargé d' Affaires and a delegation of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris under the patronage of Mr. Daniel Labaronne, French National Assembly Member (Member of Parliament), Mr. Patrick Bourdy, Departmental Councillor and Mr. Gilles Augereau, Mayor of Véretz.
The Friendship Ceremony took place in the Town Hall of Véretz in the presence of French historians and the members of the Véretz community. Chargé d' Affaires, Mrs, Thilini Jayasekara highlighted the importance of the friendship between France and Sri Lanka drawing on the example of the life led by Don Reginald Steven Hemachandra Rajahpaksa who had instilled Sri Lankan values of loyalty, hospitality and dedication in France. It was further highlighted that cooperation between Sri Lanka and France in “strategic” areas such as economic cooperation, sustainable development, environmental protection and technological cooperation was growing and that the government-to-government relationship was the principal driver for this.
Special attention was drawn to promote Sri Lanka Tourism during the ceremony with explanations given on the wide variety of various forms of touristic experiences that can be discovered in the island. Sri Lanka Tourism promotion material were distributed among those present at the ceremony. It was further proposed by the French side to initiate a twinning arrangement between Véretz and a city in Sri Lanka.
03. SRI LANKA PARTICIPATES IN THE FOOD INGREDIENT EUROPE 2019 IN PARIS
For the first time, the Sri Lanka Embassy in Paris, jointly with the Department of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign Relations has organized the Sri Lanka`s participation in the “Food Ingredient Europe - 2019 exhibition” which was held from 3rd to 5th December 2019 in Paris, France
Fi Food Ingredient Europe is the world’s leading global food and beverage ingredients platform, held every two years in a major European city and this year it was in Paris, France. Fi Food Ingredient Europe brings together the world's leading food and beverage suppliers and specialists in research and development, production and marketing to showcase the most diverse range of new and innovative ingredients and services. This year, the exhibition had over 27,000 visitors and 1,700 exhibitors. It showcased 15,000+ innovative food and beverage ingredients from around the world and made over 20 country pavilions available to all spectators
The Sri Lankan Pavilion was comprised of four exhibiting companies named: Jaindi Export (Pvt) Ltd, New Lanka Cinnamon Pvt Ltd, Manchiee De Coco Products and Kandetiya Agro Products (Pvt) Ltd, presenting products ranging from coconut-based products to spices, tea and other ailments. Along with the Sri Lankan exhibitors, the Commercial Division of the Embassy organized a stall under the flag of Sri Lanka, showcasing different Sri Lankan products to promote the food and beverage industry
Commenting on this great event, H.E. Mr. Buddhi Athauda, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in France, said that it is an urgent priority for Sri Lankan diplomats to promote exports in order to strengthen the our economy. Therefore, we have reoriented the Embassy in order to provide optimal services for exports and investment promotional activities in the French market. With that objective, the Embassy has promoted this trade show, which was co-funded by the Department of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign Relations
Sri Lankan exhibitor’s appreciation of FI Europe was overwhelmingly positive with networking, partnership building and industry insights. The Sri Lankan participation at the 33rd edition of FI Europe witnessed and contributed to the latest industry innovations, special networking with peer businesses and educational opportunities to discuss and work towards the current trends, market insights, challenges and solutions in the food and beverage world
Apart from the Sri Lanka pavilion organized by the Embassy, the Coconut Development Authority has organized a pavilion presented a total of seven companies: NDC Exports, Waguruwela Oil Mills, AS Agri Exports, Metshu Exports, Wanasinghe Holdings, Randeniya International, and Samanala Natural Foods. Renuka Agri Foods, EAOS Organic, Stay Naturals, HDDS Extracts, Cinnatopia and Verger Naturals also had their stalls in the exhibition

04. PROPARCO REASSERTS ITS COMMITMENT TO DEVELOPMENT OF SMES IN SRI LANKA
Eric Lavertu, ambassador of France to Sri Lanka and S. Renganathan, MD of Commercial Bank of Ceylon (CBC), exchanging financing agreements between Proparco and Commercial Bank of Ceylon
Proparco, a subsidiary of Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group dedicated to private sector financing, signed an agreement with Commercial Bank of Ceylon last week. Through this agreement, Proparco will be supporting a major player in financing Sri Lankan small and medium-sized enterprises through a USD 25m loan allocated to Commercial Bank of Ceylon (CBC).
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of Sri Lanka’s economy. They make up about 75% of the total number of companies in the country and account for almost half of employment and GDP in the country.
Despite the key role they play in the national economy, Sri Lankan SMEs experience major difficulties in obtaining credit, which has a significant impact on their capacity to invest, recruit and grow. Supporting SMEs is consequently central to the Sri Lankan Government’s economic development strategy.
Commercial Bank of Ceylon (CBC) was set up in 1920 and is the leading private bank in Sri Lanka. It is today the leader in financing entrepreneurs and SMEs, thanks to its products tailored to the needs of SMEs. CBC has also stood out in recent years for its skills development program, which has benefitted to over 2000 entrepreneurs since 2015. The bank has also launched a program for women entrepreneurs, which has already been followed by 850 of them.
The Bank has also established 16 Agriculture and Microfinance Units (AMFU) around the country to groom micro entrepreneurs the future SMEs by providing continuous financial and nonfinancial services. Annually Bank conduct capacity building/financial literacy programmes to over 1000 micro entrepreneurs as non-financial services. By allocating a USD 25m loan to CBC, Proparco is reasserting its support to SMEs in the country after many other credit lines targeted towards this key segment of the economy. This new long-term financing is expected to create or support over 5,000 jobs in Sri Lanka.
This operation is in line with Proparco’s commitment to support access to finance for SMEs in developing countries and emerging economies.
Over the last ten years, Proparco’s parent company, the French Development Agency, has committed 600 million EUR to sustainable projects in Sri Lanka in key development sectors including water and sanitation, urban development, energy, and irrigation. With this project, AFD Group's investments in the country will cross 850 million euro.
05. PERMANENT DELEGATION OF SRI LANKA TO UNESCO IN FRANCE CELEBRATES THE INTERNATIONAL VESAK DAY FESTIVAL AT UNESCO - OPENING CEREMONY
The UN General Assembly resolution 54/115 recognized the day of Vesak as an international day of observance given its significance for Buddhists all over the world. The Vesak Festival was celebrated successfully at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 23rd May 2019 by the Permanent Delegation of Sri Lanka to UNESCO in collaboration with Member States of the Asia Pacific Group.
The event, on the theme, ‘Buddha’s Teaching for Building Sustainable Peace Through Multicultural Education and Communication Influenced by the Thripitaka’ was graced by Former Senior Cabinet Minister Mr. Athauda Seneviratne as the Chief Guest. The key note speech on ‘Fostering Cross-Cultural Understanding and Maintaining Peace with Buddhist Teachings’ was delivered by Prof. Jun Hong Lu JP, Buddhist Master, Chairman of the Australia Oriental Media Buddhist Charity Association.
The Opening Ceremony comprised of religious blessings by the Maha Sangha led by the Most Venerable Parawahera Chandarathana Thero, Chief Incumbent of the International Buddhist Centre and messages of peace delivered by representatives of other religious faiths. Delivering the welcome speech, Ambassador Athauda stressed that ‘Buddha’s teachings have always promoted sustainable peace and in today’s world it has become paramount to communicate these teachings with the sole purpose of creating harmony among different cultures and societies.’
Venerable Phra Shakyavongsvisuddhi (Dr. Anil Sakya) a renown Buddhist Monk from Thailand graced the occasion as a Speaker enlightening the audience with in depth analysis of how Buddha’s teachings could help build sustainable peace in the world. Ven. Shakyavongsvisuddhi was awarded a special Ecclesiastical title of ‘Phra Shakyavongsvisuddhi’ in 2014 by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and is currently the Rector for the World Buddhist University and Visiting Professor in many Universities all over the world.
A speech was made also by Ven. Professor. Mahinda Deegalle, Professor of Study of Religions, Philosophies and Ethics of the Bath Spa University of Great Britain who spoke on Buddhism as a Global Civilizational Force highlighting how the ‘tripitaka’ was the most important and critical ingredient in the Buddhist civilizational force which empowered, inspired and combined peoples, their thoughts, practices, cultures and kingdoms.
The Opening Ceremony was a resounding success and was attended by over Thousand guests including members of the Buddhist clergy, other religious dignitaries, politicians representing the French Parliament, Members of the Diplomatic corps and Permanent Delegates accredited to UNESCO.
06. THE EMBASSY OF SRI LANKA PROMOTES THE COUNTRY IN FRONT OF MAJOR ACTORS OF TOURISM INDUSTRY IN FRANCE
Tuesday, 19th of February, Sri Lanka was the “Destination of Honor” at the PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) breakfast in Paris, organized every month with the most important French actors of tourism industry. His Excellency, Mr. Buddhi K. Athauda, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in France, had the opportunity to open the event and introduce them Sri Lanka. The opportunities of the country in the tourism sector were highlighted through a presentation followed by a video on Sri Lanka by Mrs. Chandima Abeyrathna, First Secretary (Commercial) of the Embassy.
Major tour operators, airlines companies, hotels and journalists attended the event with high interest in this very newly trendy destination. Indeed, Sri Lanka attracts more and more tourists: within the last decade the number of arrivals in the country has been multiplied by five.
After the presentation, professionals met officials from the embassy and discussed the potential of the country. They emphasized the diversity that is offered by Sri Lanka and appreciated the mix of culture, nature and activities, which satisfies the needs of a large panel of travelers: families, senior, millennials etc. All of them were very keen to develop and promote the destination.
According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, 2,333,796 tourists traveled to Sri Lanka in 2018. This is a growth of 10.3% compared to 2017. Among these travelers, 106,449 French tourists visited the country, crossing the 100,000 arrival mark for the first time in its history. In the Europe Region, France is in third place for tourist arrivals, behind United Kingdom and the Germany.
07. Ambassador Buddhi K. Athauda Meets with Members of the French National Assembly
Following the meeting with the French Senate last week, His Excellency Mr. Buddhi K. Athauda, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to France also met with members of the France-Sri Lanka Friendship Group of the French National Assembly, the other House of the French Parliament yesterday at the Petit Hotel of the National Assembly in Paris.
Mr. Joaquim Pueyo, the President of the National Assembly Group warmly welcomed the Ambassador and articulated on the necessity to continue the well formulated initiation of mutual bilateral relations with Sri Lanka and expressed their solidarity to Sri Lanka at all times.
Ambassador Athauda briefed the Members about the prevailing political situation in Sri Lanka and emphasized that Sri Lanka as a nation has not resorted to violence or autocratic rule. Neither the executive nor the legislature has disregarded the balance of powers which is predominant in a democratic nation. He further explained that law and order has prevailed in Sri Lanka and that the country will continue to uphold fundamental human equality and dignity and will confidently provide a feasible mechanism for pursuing social justice as all democratic nations do.
Explaining the policy of the French Government to give special focus on renewable energy, the Members of the National Assembly explained that under its commitment to the EU renewable energy directive of 2009, France has a target of producing 23% of its total energy needs from renewable energy by 2020 and reducing nuclear energy consumption from 70% to 50%. They were willing to share their expertise and plans with Sri Lanka with the firm objective to move towards green economies together with many other countries.
During the discussions that followed, Ambassador Athauda highlighted the importance of strengthening the initiated support given by France for the restructuring of the City of Colombo and its urban development projects which which will be put into force in the coming months. In response to the question posed by the Members on the boost of the Tourism Industry, Ambassador Athauda also requested French experts to share their expertise to develop tourist infrastructure including untapped natural sites to attract tourists in a sustainable manner.
H.E the Ambassador was accompanied by Embassy officials for his meeting with the Members of the National Assembly.
08. Ambassador Buddhi K. Athauda Presents Credentials to the Principality of Andorra
Buddhi K. Athauda, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to France with concurrent accreditation to the Principality of Andorra presented credentials to His Excellency, Joan Enric Vives I Sicilia of the Principality of Andorra on 6th November 2018 at a grand ceremony held at the Episcopal Palace Headquarters of the Co prince, in La Seu d’Urgell, Andorra.
During the cordial one on one discussion that ensued, Ambassador Athauda extended greetings of President Maithripala Sirisena to His Excellency, Joan Enric Vives I Sicilia and apprised him of the progress made by Sri Lanka in the political and economic fronts. He further briefed the Co prince of the initiated efforts of the new government to further strengthen, nurture and preserve democracy, fundamental rights, human rights and media freedom and to give priority to reconciliation while creating a conducive environment to boost trade, investment and tourism.
In response, His Excellency, Joan Enric Vives I Sicilia conveyed that Andorra and Sri Lanka share greater affinities as small nations where tourism plays a significant role in the economic development. He also expressed his fondness of Sri Lanka and affirmed his support for greater cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the fields of tourism and banking.
H.E the Ambassador also had meetings with Ms. Maria Ubach, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Andorra and Mr. Ramon Ginesta, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce of Andorra. During his meeting with the Andorra Chamber of Commerce, he also met with the Heads of the Hotel Association, the Association of Andorran Banks and Shopping Malls Association in Andorra.
His Excellency, Joan Enric Vives I Sicilia, hosted the Ambassadors who presented credentials to a dinner, upon the conclusion of the formal ceremony.
09. Appointment of Sri Lanka’s Honorary Consul in the Principality of Monaco
The Government of Sri Lanka, with the agreement of the Government of the Principality of Monaco, has appointed Mr. Pascal Euvrard as Sri Lanka’s Honorary Consul in Monaco, with jurisdiction in the Principality of Monaco. His Commission of Appointment was handed over to him by His Excellency Mr. Buddhi K. Athauda, the Ambassador for Sri Lanka in Paris accredited to the Principality of Monaco at the Embassy premises.
The Principality of Monaco is a country located in south western Europe, on the northern central coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and is surrounded on three sides by France containing an area of 1.98 km2 making it the second-smallest state in the world after the Vatican. Its population is about 38,400.
The Honorary Consul will support the work of Sri Lanka’s Ambassador, H.E Mr. Buddhi K. Athauda. This appointment will further enhance Sri Lanka’s economic ties with Monaco, specifically in upscaling the tourism market by sharing of expertise and technology with Monaco in this area.
During the discussion that Ambassador Athauda had with the Honorary Consul, it was emphasized that the sharing of experience in developing the tourism market could be extremely beneficial for both Sri Lanka and Monaco specifically in promoting cruise tourism and seeking potentials available in the boat industry.
Mr. Pascal Euvrard is a renowned businessman and is the Managing Director of the most famous popular touristic cruise and travel agency in Monaco with subsidiaries in Italy, Spain, Albania, Argentina and Brazil. He has paid frequent visits to Sri Lanka and is passionately looking forward to work for Sri Lanka.
Following the handing over of the Commission of Appointment, Mr. Euvrard was hosted a dinner at the Ambassador’s residence in the presence of prominent Sri Lankan businessmen and the Editor of the Diplomatic Magazine in Paris.
10. Minister Ranawaka concluded a successful mission to France
Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development successfully concluded a visit to Paris, France from 1st July to 6th July 2018. “The Investment Forum on Megapolis Projects in Western Province of Sri Lanka” with the participation of well-known French companies was held on 4th July 2018 at the French Business Confederation-MEDEF International in Paris.
The forum graced with the presence of Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, H.E Buddhi K. Athauda-Ambassador of Sri Lanka to France, Mr. Vidya D. Amarapala-Advisor to the Minister, Mr. W.M.K.P.S.R Fernando-Additional Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Pujitha Hewawasam-Coordinating Secretary to the Minister, Ms. Chandima Abeyrathna-First Secretary (Commercial) and Ms. Géraldine Lemble, Director and Ms. Chloe Mullions of MEDEF International.
Ambassador, Athauda highlighted the current economic growth of the country and bilateral economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and France during past few years. He mentioned that there is huge opportunities to develop economic ties between the two countries which is lagging behind and he promised to bridge the gap to strengthen the bilateral relationships.
Delivering his speech, Hon. Ranawaka highlighted the Sri Lanka’s geographical strategic position in the Indian Ocean on the Silk Road as an entrance door to south Asia and Africa. He briefed the country’s future challenges and to create a proper commercial environment and the government’s plan on urban development projects in the western province to transform it into one Megapolis plan. With the creation of different corridors, connected ports, public transports, the government wish to attract foreign investors. Minister further elaborated the projects available in the plan such as the financial business district, Industrial Township, Aero city, Tech city, Logistic and Tourism activities, Plantation city and Forest related economic city.
Director MEDEF, Ms. Géraldine Lemble appreciated the presentation and details of the available projects opportunities. She was committed to support the Sri Lanka with members of the Sustainable City Task Force and the Maritime Task Force of the MEDEF.
French government and French companies showed their keenness on Sri Lankan market and requested details in some areas to improve the trade relationship between both countries. Interested companies are now waiting for international bids of the government to implement some projects.
The implementation of this grand strategy will impact and transform the economy, enhancing the productivity and growth of the country as well as citizen daily life.
Further, Hon Minister and the delegation had an opportunity to visit the Saint Lazara Station which is similar to proposed Pettah Multimodal Transport Hub.
11. International Vesak Day Festival at UNESCO HQ
Promotion of Peace and Non-Violence through the life and teachings of Gauthama Buddha celebrated during the International Vesak Day Festival at UNESCO
In accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution 54/115 recognizing the day of Vesak as an international day of observance given its significance for Buddhists all over the world, the Vesak Festival was celebrated successfully at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 24th May 2018 by the Permanent Delegation of Sri Lanka to UNESCO in collaboration with Member States of the Asia Pacific Group.
The event which was organized on the theme, ‘Promotion of Peace and Non-Violence: Buddha’s Way of Life’ was graced by Minister of Higher Education & Cultural Affairs, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe as the Chief Guest. The key note speech on Énhancing the Spiritual Harmony of Mankind with Buddhist Teachings’ was delivered by Prof. Jun Hong Lu JP, Buddhist Master, Chairman of the World’s Parliament of Religions Foundation and the Australia Oriental Media Buddhist Charity Association.
The celebrations commenced with an Opening Ceremony which comprised of religious blessings by the Maha Sangha led by the Most Venerable Parawahera Chandarathana Thero, Chief Incumbent of the International Buddhist Centre and cultural performances portraying the life of the Buddha and messages of peace delivered by representatives of other religious faiths. The representative of Pope Francis from the Holy See, Msgr. Francesco Follo, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to UNESCO delivered the message on behalf of the Christian faith, Islam by His Excellency Ahmad Jalali, Permanent Delegate of Iran to UNESCO, Jewish by Rabbi Lewin Moshe, Jewish religious leader and Hindu by Swami Veetamohananda, Head of the Ramakrishna Vedantic Centre.
Addressing the Opening Ceremony on the topic ‘Buddhism as the path towards World’s Peace’, Minister Rajapakshe traced the emergence of different religious ideologies which all teach nonviolence, peace and compassion as core virtues. Minister Rajapakshe also highlighted with gratitude the role played by the Mahasangha in preserving Buddhism to the world.
Delivering the welcome speech, Ambassador Athauda stressed that ‘’at a time when the world is segregated into different groups with much enmity and violence, the Vesak season is an opportune time to contemplate on the teachings of Buddha which reflects on the virtues of living in cohesion among the diversity of cultures and religions’. He also underpinned the significance of celebrating the Vesak ceremony at UNESCO, an organization created for building peace in the minds of men and women.
The second session of the day started with a meditation session conducted by the Most Venerable Parawahera Chandrarathana Nayaka Thera, Nayaka Thera, Chief Incumbent of the International Buddhist Centre in Paris followed by a Symposium held with a view to celebrate intercultural and interfaith harmony. Erudite Buddhist scholar, Most Venerable Sitagu Sayadaw Dr. Ashin Nyanissara, Vice Sangha Raja and Chancellor of Sitagu International Buddhist Academy from Myanmar and renowned academic Professor Osmund Bopearachchi, Adjunct Professor of Central and South Asian Art, Archaeology, and Numismatics, University of California, Berkeley, USA made presentations on the main theme. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion hosted by celebrated journalist and Head of France 24 English, Gallagher Fenwick where the panellists discussed and deliberated on the interfaith dialogue and cohesion.
The event encompassing a symposium, knowledge sharing platform, intellectual dialogue, artistry and Buddhist cultural celebrations which spanned over one day, concluded with an evening of vibrant and mesmerizing cultural performances showcasing diverse forms of devotion to Lord Gauthama Buddha and intangible cultural heritage of Sri Lanka depicted by the cultural troupe of the Sri Lanka Army who flew to Paris under the aegis of the Sri Lanka Army Commander, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake. They were joined by both local and international artists representing Sri Lanka and several other countries of the ASPAC Group enacting various dances as well as songs of devotion and peace. The cultural evening commenced with a devotional song by Sir Jayantha Kapuwatta followed by a plethora of peformances comprising of beautiful opera singing by a Japanese soprano singer, Ms. Ami Nakamura, pulsating dancing by the Chinese dancers, a French song on love sung by Mr. Lakshan Abeynayaka and Ambre Rochard as well as spectacular performances by the Sri Lankan dancing troupe.
Simultaneously, an exhibition of Buddhist art created by famous artist Mahinda Herath was on display. A Ceylon Tea Station also operated at the premises which attracted most of the crowd. The invitees were also treated to a food festival with an array of authentic Sri Lankan, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Italian, and French cuisine catering to around 2500 people.
The Vesak Day Celebrations which was a resounding success was attended by over 2500 people including members of the Buddhist clergy, other religious dignitaries, politicians representing the French Parliament, Members of the Diplomatic corps and Permanent Delegates accredited to UNESCO, staff of the UNESCO Secretariat, media, academia and Members of the Sri Lankan as well as other communities.

12. Ambassador Buddhi K. Athauda presents credentials to the Principality of Monaco.
Buddhi K. Athauda, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to France with concurrent accreditation to the Principality of Monaco presented credentials to His Serene Highness, Prince Albert II of the Principality of Monaco on 29th May 2018 at grand ceremony held at Palais Princier de Monaco.
During the cordial one on one discussion that ensued, Ambassador Athauda extended greetings of President Maithripala Sirisena to His Serene Highness Prince Albert II and apprised him of the progress made by Sri Lanka in the political and economic fronts including steps taken by the current Government to strengthen democracy, good governance and accountability while creating a conducive environment to boost trade, investment and tourism.
In response, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II conveyed that Monaco and Sri Lanka share greater affinities as small nations where tourism plays a significant role in the economic development. He also expressed his fondness of Sri Lanka and affirmed his support for greater cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the fields of tourism, entertainment and banking.
The Government Advisor & Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Monaco, Gilles Tonelli, hosted the Ambassadors who presented credentials to a luncheon, upon the conclusion of the formal ceremony.
Ambassador Athauda was accompanied to the credentials ceremony by Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Monaco William Piccione.
13. Diplomatic Reception, Book Launch & Cultural Event
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris concluded a diplomatic reception and combined book launch and cultural event on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka at UNESCO Headquarters in the evening of 3rd of April 2018. The event was organized for the diplomatic community and French aristocracy living in France. His Excellency Mr. Jean Marin Schuh, the French Ambassador in Sri Lanka in chief and around 300 guests including Ambassadors, diplomats and members of permanent delegations of UNESCO in France participated in the event.
The celebration commenced with the singing of the national anthem and the lighting of the traditional oil lamp by H.E the Ambassador, Mr. B.K Athauda and H.E Mr. Jean Marin Schuh, the French Ambassador in Sri Lanka. The programme commenced with a descriptive documentary on legendary Ceylon Tea, the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewelry industry and Sri Lanka Tourism.
The cultural performances by the Tisaravi Dancing Group added exoticism and colour to the event. The Sri Lanka traditional dance items comprised of a low country traditional dance and a second splendid dance imitation of the Sri Lankan peacock. The dancers were adorned with exquisite costumes and delicate jewellery and replete with beautiful Sri Lankan traditional dance movements.
Ambassador Athauda while addressing the gathering emphasized on the rapid economic growth in Sri Lanka and explained that Sri Lanka is competing with the new world and was progressing rapidly to become a developed nation. On par with all democratic nations, Sri Lanka has established transparency and trust within its governing system and had succeeded in eradicating bribery and corruption. He further highlighted that Sri Lanka is now playing a pivotal role at the UNESCO Executive Council. He stated that the UN International Vesak Festival will be held in Paris at the UNESCO Headquarters on the 24th of May 2018 and that Buddhism has now become a fast growing philosophy in the West.
Sri Lankan English author, Ashok Ferrey launched his book titled, ‘The Ceaseless Chatter of Demons’ or ‘L’íncessant bavardage des demons’ in both English and French languages during the event. Mr. Ferrey was born in Sri Lanka and obtained his degree in Mathematics at the Oxford University. His novel was the first local Sri Lankan novel in sixty years to be translated and published in Paris, and the second in Sri Lankan history. The audience was entrapped with the short readings made by Mr. Ferrey and French author, Ms. Maylis de Kerangal which were intricately linked with Sri Lankan culture.
Before the closure of the event, the guests were treated to a Sri Lankan dinner filled with delicious Sri Lankan cuisine. This event which was a combination of Sri Lankan cultural performances, manifestations of local industries, Sri Lankan English Literature and Sri Lankan cuisine became a truly Sri Lankan experience in Paris for the invitees.
14. Sri Lanka Participates in the 'Salon Mondial du Tourism' in Paris
For the first time, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Sri Lanka Embassy in France jointly organized the Sri Lanka’s participation at the 43rd Edition of the “Salon Mondial du Tourism”, which was held from 15th to 18th March 2018 in Paris, France along with 10 Sri Lankan travel agencies.
This exhibition organized jointly with “Destination Nature” gives industry professionals unique visibility to the general public. The fair is the best source of travel inspiration to discover new horizons and a new way of conceiving travel abroad. With more than 300 destinations presented in an area of 17,000 m², tourist offices, tour operators, travel agencies, accommodation sites, bloggers etc. This year edition attracted around 100 000 visitors during 4 days and 570 exhibitors.
The Salon Mondial du Tourism was inaugurated by Mrs. Geneviève Darrieussecq, Mayor of Mont-de-Marsan and Secretary of State to Mrs. Florence PARLY, Minister of the Armed Forces. She visited the Sri Lanka booth and she had an opportunity to see Sri Lankan traditional dance and to get information about Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka pavilion ceremonially opened by H.E Mr. B K Athauda Ambassador of Sri Lanka, Ms. Audrey Quentin of Comexposium, Ms. Sarangi Thilakasena, Assistant Director of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau along with other diplomatic officials of the Embassy.
Sri Lankan traditional dancing performance as well as traditional food and the Ceylon Tea counter at Sri Lanka pavilion attracted a large number of visitors.
Sri Lankan travel and tour companies such as Airwing Tours, Blackpool Holdings, Chamathka Holidays, World Lanka Tours, Yatrah Travels, Zenith Expeditions, Ayubwan Tours , Bernard Tours, Asian Escape, and Travel Talk Asia had the opportunity to meet French public interesting to travel in Sri Lanka exposing different activities and tours.
15. Minister Susil Premajayantha briefs the Director General of UNESCO
Minister Susil Premajayantha briefs the Director General of UNESCO regarding major strides forward in Sri Lanka to invigorate the Science & Technology sector
Minister Susil Premajayantha, Minister of Science, Technology and Research met with Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Irina Bokova at the sidelines of the 39 session of the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris on 06 November 2017.
During the meeting, Minister Premajayantha informed the Director General about significant steps taken by the Government of Sri Lanka to improve and strengthen the science and technology sector of the country including the decision to construct a state of the art Centre dedicated for science & innovation and reforming STEM ( science, technology, engineering, maths) education.
In response, Director General Bokova reaffirmed UNESCO's continued support to Sri Lanka in future. Further , she thanked Sri Lanka for her fruitful contributions to the role played by UNESCO for the common good of humanity.
In conclusion, Minister Premajayantha conveyed the appreciation of the Government of Sri Lanka for the excellent leadership given by Director General Bokova in spearheading the organization during the last eight years and wished her well in her future endeavours upon the completion of her term in the coming days.

16. Celebration of 70 Years of Sri Lanka’s Independence in Paris
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris celebrated the 70th anniversary of the independence of Sri Lanka at Espace Saint Pierre, Neuilly sur Seine in the morning of 4th of February 2018. An event was organized for the Sri Lankan community living in France. Around 700 guests representing all ethnic groups participated in the celebration.
The celebration commenced with the singing of the national anthem and the lighting of the oil lamp by H.E the Ambassador, Mr. B.K Athauda and by a group of children representing all ethnicities. Following the observance of the two minute silence in remembrance of all Sri Lankans who laid down their lives for the nation, religious dignitaries representing all four major religions in Sri Lanka – Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity – blessed the country, the leaders and the people. The messages of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana were read by the Ambassador and members of the staff. The invitees were hosted to traditional Sri Lankan sweetmeats in addition to cakes in the morning. During the celebration, Sri Lanka tourism was promoted and Ceylon tea was served to all guests.
Ambassador Athauda while addressing the gathering emphasized on the glorious history of Sri Lanka and urged the community to contribute to the development of Sri Lanka. He also underlined the policy initiatives taken by the new Government to achieve a high level of democracy through reconciliation, strengthening of the rule of law, good governance as well as economic development. He informed that the Embassy was playing an important role in bridging the economies of Sri Lanka and France and that under the guidance of His Excellency, President Emmanuel Macron, he is working with a representative of President Macron’s Economic Council to achieve this target. The measures taken by the Embassy and the Government to address the issues faced by the Sri Lankan community living in France were also highlighted.
The cultural performances of 17 performers including dancing groups and Sri Lankan classical and contemporary music and songs added colour to the event. The performances were rich with the essence of Sri Lankan culture, complete with elaborate dances and sophisticated artistry. The invitees were entertained with top quality performances for 4 hours. At the conclusion of the event, the invitees were hosted to traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry.
17. Ambassador B. K. Athauda assumes duties in France
